Small Urban Park

Competition Entry

The chosen site for this proposal exists near the western edge of the old city of Thessaloniki, where one of its most prominent streets meets the byzantine fortification walls.

At its present state the site can be easily over looked as it sits behind a busy street and inside a quiet residential area.

The surprise of its discovery and notions that arose through analysis and had to do with concepts of spaces that are public and private/internal and external,  motivated the design process. Therefore a proposal for the transformation of the vacant site to a small park open to the public and the neighborhood was justified.

The proposed park uses the fortification wall as a backdrop, while on the remaining three sides vertical weathered steel panels are positioned in varying distances from each other.

Thus, the perimeter is redefined while the gaps between the panels allow for glimpses inside and vice versa.

Internally ,seating and a deck platform  give the opportunity for theatrical and performative acts to take place, while plants, bushes and trees conclude the picture.

The plants in their majority are vegetables meant to be grown and harvested by people from the neighborhood.
